Filming in Tokyo with the Canon C100, (april to may 2016)

This book is the japanse marktplaats or ebay for cars. It is filled with tiny pictures of secondhand cars. You can buy this book for 270 yen (about €2,50) at the supermarket.

17-8-2016 We had a talk with gallerist Johan Deumens about Mono Men.

Same boat, different backgrounds.

Thinking about making a little illuminated sign / box for the dias. Yesterday Lucas Vlamings helped me out to make some renders

English text:

You see them everywhere in Tokyo: security guards at construction sites. Come rain or shine, they are always there. Their perseverance is as absurd as it is admirable.

The age of teinen, the Japanese word for retirement, is 62. However, retiring in Japan does not mean the same thing as in Europe. Teinen marks the end of ‘lifetime employment’ but not a complete withdrawal from the labour force. This transitional arrangement is designed to free up jobs for younger workers.

What’s more, if you have spent your entire career working six days a week and most of your social life has revolved around work, retirement is akin to social isolation.

Visualising a small, everyday subject that examines a larger phenomenon is an approach that Simone Mudde and Olivier van Breugel have previously applied to projects such as McHotel (2012) and Between Screens (2014). Mono Men (2016) is a series of monumental videos about eternity and boredom. The dedication with which the guards perform their monotonous work raises questions about the meaning and perception of time.

Dia experiments succeeded, thank to Wouter le Duc for letting me borrow his Mamiya 645.

Writing texts this weekend for BredaPhoto & Paradox. (18-6-'16)

Beaming big in the hallway of our studio. (4 meters wide)

Bought some dia flim to experiment with the sequencing.

Today (13-6) we had a talk with curators Jan & Reinout from BredaPhoto.

Because we're mainly focussing on our video project at the moment, this project is on hold for a bit. In tokyo Ran Kokubun helped us order new catalogs with strange japanese items. So we will further develop this project later on.

Saito-san

Prints of all the videos we shot, to have a bit of overview.

We went to the new Kummer & Herrman studio (June 1st) to show where we stand at this point with the project and to hear their take on it. We took all the 4 big screens with us. The feedback helped us out a great deal. Next week we have more meetings planned with fellow artists. For now some new edits.

5 screens? Tofu exhibition talk in Tokyo.

Ran Kokubun helping us out with translation.

New setup. Screens next to each other is too uniform. We're trying to figure out what form this project needs.

(26-5-'16)

Thinking about possible titles:
(25-5-'16)

– You won't believe what's about to happen

– (Tune in to) The melody of duration

– The nail that sticks out must be hammered down

– Tomorrow is another day

   Tomorrow is the same

– There's only one way out

– Swing along with the process

– the future is rosey, the past is golden, the present grey.

– The same does not remain the same / The same is never the same

That's us.

Schopenhauer: 'though we live all our lives in expectation of better things, we often at the same time long regretfully for what is past. The present, on the other hand, is regarded as something quite temporary and serving only as the road to our goal.'

Monomen (2015) => NEW TEXT

Flyer final -> off to the printer (27-6-'16)

(4-7-'16) First dummy, side view.

20-7-2016 Just as Simone likes to do pottery, Olivier has hsi own thing as well. Last year he bought a Makita saw with a ruler, we don't know the proper name in English. But since then he's been trying to make some things. Recently he finished this bookcase for all our art (related) books.
